Spain, Kingdom. An Order of Military Merit, Red Division, II Class Cross c.1910

(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1864 by Queen Isabel II of Spain. Type I. Red Division. Alfonso XII issue. Of superb manufacturing, a breast star consisting of an eight pointed beaded star in polished silver, exhibiting an obverse centrepiece composing of a beautifully enameled red four armed cross with elegant golden edges in Gold (weighting 18k), featuring very detailed fleur-de-lys emblem in each quadrant also in Gold, superposing by typical of time period Spanish coat of arms with red, blue, white, and green enamels, 12 o’clock arm presenting clasp engraving 25-SEPBRE 1909 (September 25, 1909), beneath of a Spanish royal crown with red enameled details, both in Gold, reverse with typical pin assembly and dual stays, measuring 79.42 mm (w) x 78.22 (h), presenting minor toned silver on the tips, otherwise near to mint.

Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was instituted in Spain by Queen Isabel II/Isabella II on August 3, 1864. The Order was created to recognize military personnel for outstanding and meritorious actions during the performance of their duties in time of war, or peace. The awards with white distinction were awarded in recognition of distinguished services rendered to Spain in peacetime, while the awards with red distinction were awarded in recognition of courage and effective actions in combat.
