Spain, Kingdom. An Order of Naval Merit, 1st Class with White Distinction, c. 1872-1876
Orden del Mérito Naval, 1ra clase con distinción blanca. Instituted in 1866. In bronze gilt with navy blue and white enamels, measuring 32 mm (w) x 66 mm (h) inclusive of its crown suspension, chipping evident in the navy blue enamels on the anchor on both sides, original ribbon suspended from a traditional Spanish-style horizontal hanger with pinback, very fine.
Footnote: The Order of Naval Merit was established on August 3, 1866 by Queen Isabella II as the Order of Naval Merit (Spanish: Orden del Mérito Naval) and amended many times (in 1918, 1926, 1931, 1938, 1942, 1976, 1995, 2003 and 2007). During the Spanish Civil War, it was recognized by both sides of the conflict.
