(Orden al Mérito Naval). Instituted 1866. Alfonso XII - Alfonso XIII Period. A silver gilt sash badge consisting of an enameled white Latin cross with obverse centre displaying an enameled blue anchor, suspended by Spanish crown in Gold, measuring 32.32 mm (w) x 67.82 mm (h- inclusive of crown and integral cross), presenting old gold test on the 6 o’clock arm, anchor exhibiting enamel loss, with white enamel hairline cracks, with residue, on original silk sash, good.
Footnote: The Order of Naval Merit was established in Spain by Queen Isabel II/Isabella II on August 3, 1866. It was founded to recognize the Spanish Navy Force which was taking part of many overseas battles at that time. The Order was awarded to members of the Spanish Naval Forces, Civil Guard, civilians, and foreigners for meritorious and gallant actions within the sphere of naval service. The awards with white distinction were awarded in recognition of distinguished services and actions rendered to Spain in peacetime. In 1995, the Order was amended by Juan Carlos I, and the yellow and blue distinctions were added to the Order.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
