(Cruz Roja Española). Instituted 1876. Republic Period (1931-1938). An eight-pointed rayed star in silver gilt, suspended by a typical Mural Crown also in silver gilt, obverse centre depicting a red and white-enamelled symbol of the Red Cross with the Latin motto “In Hoc Signo Salus” (In this Sign, Health), surrounded a large green-enamelled laurel wreath, with the Malta shield on the 6 o’clock arm, reverse centre featuring a blue and white-enamelled medallion, with ring suspension marked 800 silver purity, measuring 45.36 mm (w) x 70.43 mm (h - inclusive ring suspension), with replaced reverse medallion and toned silver in the crown suspension, better than fine.
Footnote: The Spanish Order of the Red Cross was instituted by Isabel II on July 6, 1864. It has been awarded to members of the Spanish Red Cross in recognition of meritorious service within the realm of public health care and service.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
