(Cruz de Guerra). Instituted 1937. Type I, 1937-1942 issued. Of characteristic German manufacture, a silver eight-pointed star featuring superposed obverse centre consisting of a four-armed cross in bronze gilt, depicting alternating royal Spanish iconography on each arm, with detailed laurel wreath and crossed swords in each quadrant both in bronze gilt, centre depicting enameled blue, red and white Spanish coat of arms surrounded by the inscription AL MERITO EN CAMPANA (Merit in Campaign) also in bronze gilt, measuring 62.16 mm (w) x 61.91 mm (h), with toned silver, extremely fine.
Footnote: the War Cross was instituted on January 26, 1937 and amended in 1942. It was a direct descendant of the Military Order of Mary Christine (María Cristina) created for the Queen Regent in 1890 and intended to reward military bravery.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
