Instituted June 10, 1874. An Oval Medal in Bronze, the obverse presenting a sea wall and narrow tower with two mules in the upper field, surrounded by a ring inscribed AL EJERCITO LIBERTADOR Y DEFENSORES DE LA INVICTA BILBAO 2 DE MAYO DE 1874, the reverse presents a plain wreath, measures 21.97mm (w) x 30.37mm (h – inclusive of integral ring), weighs 7.0 grams (including ribbon), worn on original ribbon, very dark patina, light contact to edges, very fine condition.
Footnote: This medal was awarded to the Army and Navy under Marshal Serrano and General Concha who delivered Bilbao from the besieging forces under Don Carlos in May of 1874.
