Sweden, Kingdom. A Royal Order of the Seraphim, Grand Cross Star, by Kretly, Paris, c.1880

(Kungliga Serafimerorden). Instituted by King Frederick I on 23 February 1748. Of fine French manufacture and quality, consisting of a large Maltese Cross with ball finials, each arm featuring hand filed diamond facets, with separately affixed winged charubs in each quadrant, with a silver patriarchal cross overlaid on each arm, obverse centre presenting large blue enameled field on Gold with a white enameled "IHS" representing the Order Motto Iesus Hominum Salvator, with three Gold Swedish Crowns and three white enameled nails representing the nails with which Jesus Christ was crucified, reverse centre featuring the makers cartouche of Kretly, Paris, dual stays and a principle pin assembly, hallmarked on catch with boars head denoting French manufacture and small silver guarantee post 1838, measuring 85 mm (w) x 85 mm (h), pleasingly toned silver, with very minor enamel loss, remains extremely fine.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
