(Nordstjärneorden). Instituted 1748 by King Frederick I. In Gold, consisting of a white enamelled Maltese Cross with ball finials, crowns in each quadrant, obverse centre presenting a white enamelled star on a blue background, encircled by the Motto NESCIT OCCASUM (It knows no decline), reverse presents matching centre, with an ornate Royal crown suspension, hallmarked on the integral suspension ring with a French Import mark denoting 750 Gold quality, measuring 35.76mm (w) x 58.73mm (h - inclusive of crown, and integral suspension loop), weighs 12.6 grams (including ribbon), on period black silk ribbon, small enamel chip to blue enamel on the obverse central medallion, otherwise very fine condition.
Footnote: This Order was founded by King Frederick I on April 28, 1748. Apart from the Order of the Seraphim, it is the only other Order currently conferred in Sweden. From 1748 to 1975, the Order was conferred upon Swedish citizens and foreigners for achievements in the fields of science, art, and literature, as well for meritorious service to the state. Since 1975 it has been conferred exclusively upon members of the Swedish Royal Family and foreigners. It is most often conferred upon junior foreign royals and holders of foreign offices. Prior to 1975, the Order was worn on a black ribbon, but since 1975, the Order has been worn on a blue ribbon with yellow edges.
