Vatican. An Order of St. Gregory the Great, Knight
(Ordine di San Gregorio Magno). Instituted in 1831. In silver gilt, a red enamelled Maltese cross with ball finials, the obverse medallion features a superimposed bust of St. Gregory on a blue enamel field, surrounded by a ring inscribed ST. GREGORIUS MAGNUS, the reverse presents the inscription PRO DEO ET PRINCIPE (For God and Ruler), on a blue enamelled field, surrounded by the inscription GREGORIUS XVI.P.M.ANNOI., the badge is surmounted by a green enamelled oak leaf, measures 42.5mm (w) x 64.5mm (h – inclusive of wreath suspension and integral ball), weighs 21.1 grams (including ribbon), worn on original ribbon, lightly faded, the enamels are intact, loss of gilt to arms, remains in very fine condition.
