France, III Republic. A Medal for the Conquerors of the Bastille, 1889
(Insigne en or de Vainqueur de la Bastille decerne aux Gardes). Instituted 1789. Type III (1889). In bronze, a lozenge shaped decoration with ball finials at each point, the obverse features an open padlock with broken chains and two cannonballs, surrounded by the inscription LA LIBERTE CONQUISE LE 14 JUILLET 1789 (Freedom Conquered July 14 1789), the reverse bears a sword with a wreath around the middle of the blade, surrounded by the inscription IGNORANTDE DATOS NE QUISQUAM SERVIAT ENSES (They Don’t Know That You Can’t Follow Anyone), measures 26.6mm (w) x 36.5mm (h), weighs 9.3 grams (including ribbon), worn on a period French tricoloured ribbon via a roller suspension, light wear to medal, dark patina, ribbon strongly discoloured and shows evident wear, a rare decoration in very fine condition.
