France, Republic. A Medal for the Second Expedition to Madagascar 1895
(Medaille Commemorative De Madagascar). Instituted 31 July 1886. A circular medal constructed of silver, the obverse centre bears the left facing image of la Republique wearing an ornate winged visor helmet circumscribed with “REPVBLIQVE FRANCAISE” (FRENCH REPUBLIC), the reverse centre bears the image of an anchor, a trumpet and leaves, a flag pole is centred with “HONNEUR ET PATRIE” (HONOUR AND HOMELAND) inscribed on it, circumscribed with “MADAGASCAR 1895”, the obverse is marked “O.ROTY” and is marked on the edge “1 ARGENT”, measuring 30.07 mm (w) x 34.50 mm (h), weighing 20.3 g, with suspension ring on a green and white horizontal striped ribbon with “”1895” clasp, very fine.
