Germany. A Cased Iron Cross 1939 First Class by Friedrich Orth of Wien

A textbook example of an Iron Cross 1939 First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1939 1. Klasse) by Friedrich Orth of Vienna; a cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse plain, with a slender banjo style vertical pinback, a barrel hinge, and a slightly rounded catch; maker marked “15” for Friedrch Orth, Vienna - also displaying Orth’s typical die-flaw in the form of a dot on the rim of the frame of the twelve o’clock arm; measuring 44.33 mm (w) x 44.39 mm (h); weighing 20.8 grams. Accompanied by its presentation case; constructed of heavy pressed paper, with a faux leather (leatherette) exterior, with an outline of an Iron Cross embossed in silver on the exterior; lined interior lid, with a functional spring catch with stud release; intact interior fabric hinge cover and functional exterior metal hinge; measuring 70 mm (w) x 70 mm (h); the cross with the core well preserved, with light patina on the frame from age; in overall better than very fine condition.
