Germany, Wehrmacht. An Early Panzer EM/NCO’s Overseas Side Cap, by Willy Sprengpfeil. c.1940
(Wehrmacht Heer Panzer Schiffchen). Constructed of thick black wool, with fold-down scalloped panels to the front and side. The front of the cap is missing its original eagle, but still has its original pink Waffenfarbe soutache, indicating Panzer units, sewn to the cap, along with a tri-colour cockade that is sewn to the cap via dark green backing. Each side of the cap is ordained by a single metal rivet for air circulation. The interior lined in olive green cotton, maker marked “Sprengpfeil Mützenfabrik, Hamburg 19, 1940”, along with the size “57” and a foreign theatre mark. It measures 275 mm (w) x 93 mm (h); in overall near extremely fine condition.
