Germany, DRK. A German Red Cross Subordinate’s Hewer
(Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Hauer). A well-preserved Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross/DRK) Subordinate’s Hewer, measuring 41 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 26.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a serrated lower edge, blunted tip, and double-sided fullers extending the majority of the length of each side. Unmarked, the blade sits securely within a nickel-plated non-magnetic alloy hilt, with the seam covered by an intact blackened leather buffer pad. The crossguard features double-sided central oval medallions, the obverse of which bears a raised DRK insignia in the form of a German national eagle clutching a Geneva Cross, overlaid by a mobile swastika. The handle grip consists of two pieces of pebbled black bakelite, secured in place with two magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. Magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat, while a downward-pointing hook emanating from the side of the shaft accommodates a frog. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade and scratching of the scabbard paint. It remains in an overall extremely fine condition.
