Germany, Empire. A Miniature Portrait in a Hand Carved Bone Frame, c.1850

Of French and Italian influence, a unique and delicate portrait with a likeness to Duchess Maria Anna Josepha of Bavaria, the frame of which consists of handcarved bone creating a patterned border with floral aesthetics, an oval portrait is inset in the center with a handpainted portrait of a woman wearing a white corseted dress and a Bavarian Order of St. Anna, the reverse presents the original floral paper covering, measures 115.8mm (w) x 149.1mm (h – inclusive of integral loop), a metal integral ring sits at 12 o’clock with an attached ring, weighs 115.5 grams, wear evident to frame, wear to the reverse as there is a raised section outlining the oval portrait, an excellent quality work of art in both the portrait and frame, in extremely fine condition.
