Germany, Heer. A 54th Mountain Pioneer Battalion Bayonet, by Carl Eickhorn
(1. Gebirgs-Division Bajonett). A very well-preserved Gebirgs-Pionier Bataillon 54 (54th Mountain Pioneer Battalion) commemorative bayonet, measuring 400 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 250 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. A fuller runs approximately two-thirds the length of each side of the blade. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is a detailed unit dedication of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT - GEBIRGS-PIONIER BATAILLON 54” (“IN MEMORY OF MY SERVICE TIME - 54th MOUNTAIN PIONEER BATTALION”), flanked by oak leaves, a Wehrmacht eagle, and an edelweiss. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “ORIGINAL EICKHORN, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic logo of a squirrel clutching a sword. It sits securely within a one-piece nickel-plated alloy hilt, with the seam covered by a fully-intact black leather buffer pad. The hilt features a hooked quillon and curved pommel facilitating a comfortable grip, as well as a hollow insertion slot retaining a functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are secured together with two magnetic metal rivets. The bayonet is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. The throat retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the bayonet in place during storage, and is held together by a single side rivet. Emanating from the side of the shaft is a downward-pointing hook for the accommodation of a frog. The latter is included, and is constructed of brown leather, securely stitched into a loop for belt suspension. Some age-appropriate issues are evident, and include slight pitting of the blade, oxidation of the nickel-plated features, and loss of scabbard paint. It is in an overall better than very fine condition.
