Germany, Heer. A Panzergrenadier Leutnant’s Service Tunic

(Heer Waffenrock für Leutnant der Panzergrenadiertruppe). A very well-preserved Heer Panzergrenadier Leutnant’s tunic, constructed of field-grey wool. It features a turned-down collar which is fully lined on the obverse in smoothd dark green wool, and flanked on each side by tabs. The latter are constructed of dark green wool with buckram cores, are topped by machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire insignia bisected by braided green threaded tresses, and measure 40 mm (w) x 70 mm (l). The shoulders are flanked by boards constructed of meadow-green wool with buckram cores, topped by four bands of silver aluminum wire piping. Each measuring 32 mm (w) x 110 mm (l), the boards are secured in place with machine stitching at the outer edge and with pebbled zink buttons on the inner edge. The cuff of each sleeve is rolled up to a depth of 160 mm and is secured in place with two pieces of machine stitching. Four pleated pockets are set into each breast flap, all closing with scalloped flaps perforated with reinforced buttonholes, in turn meeting pebbled zink buttons. Stitched onto the tunic just above the upper right pocket is an insignia constructed of dark green wool and bearing a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle insignia measures 105 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. It closes with five pebbled zink buttons on the right flap meeting six reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. Stitched onto the tunic through the penultimate buttonhole are ribbons for the War Merit Cross II Class and the Eastern Front Medal. The interior is fully encompassed by a field-grey rayon liner which transitions into a pinstripe design through the arms. A single pocket is set into the upper left breast, with an additional reinforced slit in the lower half of the same flap for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. Unmarked, the tunic measures approximately 41 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 60 cm, and an overall body length of 64 cm. Minor soiling and material fatigue is visible to the exterior wool and interior liner, and one breast button is missing. The tunic remains in an overall near extremely fine condition.
