Germany, Heer. An Infantry Officer’s Visor Cap, by Peter Küpper

(Heer Schirmmütze für Offizier der Infanterie). A well-preserved Heer Infantry Officer’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey whipcord wool. It features reinforced sidewalls, fully lined on the exterior with a dark green doeskin wool cap band. White wool piping trims both the top and bottom edges of the cap band, with an additional band of identical piping surrounding the crown. Pinned onto the peak of the cap is a silvered zink insignia consisting of a Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, secured in place with two reverse attachment prongs and measuring 65 mm (w) x 28 mm (h). Stitched onto the centre of the cap band beneath the eagle is an insignia consisting of a dark green wool base bearing a metal tricolour cockade within a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire oak leaf wreath. The cap band is also flanked on each side by pebbled zink buttons securing in place a decorative silver aluminum wire chinstrap, adjustable with dual sliding knots of identical construction. It rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in a matte black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse. The interior features a brown leather sweatband measuring 45 mm in width, and secured in place with a row of machine stitching. An array of ventilation holes is set into the forehead area for added comfort. The interior also features a complete field-grey rayon liner, stamped on the crown with a maker’s mark of “PEKÜRO” for the firm of Peter Küpper, Wuppertal-Ronsdorf. It measures approximately 240 mm (w) x 270 mm (l) x 180 mm (h). Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include some fatigue and wear to the exterior wool, small patches of mothing around the exterior of the crown, fatigue of the wire insignia, and distortion of the sidewall reinforcement which has slightly warped the structure. The cap is in an overall very fine condition.
