Germany, Heer. An Officer’s M43 Field Cap
(Heer Einheitsfeldmütze M43 für Offiziere). A Heer Officer’s M43 field cap, constructed of field-grey whipcord wool. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down side panels, scalloped at the front, providing optional ear and neck protection to the wearer. When not in use, the panels are rolled up and severed in place at the front with two pebbled zink buttons which emanate from the right flap and meet an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. The outer edge of the crown is fully trimmed with a length of silver aluminum wire piping. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a field-grey rayon trapezoid bearing a machine-embroidered grey Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, directly above a tri-colour cockade. The insignia measures 54 mm (w) x 44 mm (h). Completing the exterior features is a protruding card stock-reinforced visor, fully lined in identical wool. The interior features a partial brown leather sweatband set across the forehead, and is fully encompassed by a multi-piece grey rayon liner. A size mark of “57” is stamped onto the crown in black ink, but the cap is otherwise unmarked. It measures approximately 20 cm (w) x 21 cm (l) x 14 cm (h). The cap demonstrates signs of consistent field use, including apparent moisture exposure which has rendered the base fabric and visor core limp and malleable. It is in an overall very fine condition.
