Germany, Heer. An Officer’s Sabre

(Heer Offizierssäbel). An exceptionally well-preserved Heer Officer’s sabre, measuring 98 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features an 85 cm-long, nickel-plated, curved magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and a fuller running approximately two-thirds of the length of each side. The blade is unmarked and sits securely within a gilded brass hilt complete with a hand guard, and with an intact black leather buffer pad covering the seam. The obverse of the crossguard bears a raised Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, while the reverse features an unspoiled central raised shield where a recipient may engrave a monogram or other identifying insignia. The upper portion of the hilt bears a raised oak leaf design, and secured in place a ribbed and lacquered black handle, with the ribbing retaining an original twisted and rolled gilt wire cord. Wrapped around the hilt is a matching and period original portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn suspended from a dark slate-grey leather strap decorated with silver aluminum wire tresses along both edges. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a curved and black-painted magnetic metal shaft. The throat retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the sabre in place during storage. Emanating from the upper quarter of the shaft is an integral loop for the accommodation of a hanger. The former is included and consists of a pressed brown leather strap culminating in a magnetic metal buckle for uniform suspension. Secured to the obverse is a functional magnetic metal spring catch which locks onto the scabbard’s loop. Demonstrating no notable wear or damage, this superb Officer’s sabre is in an extremely fine condition.
