Germany, HJ. A Member’s Knife, by Carl Wüsthof
(HJ Fahrtenmesser). A HJ member’s knife, measuring 255 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 140 mm-long magnetic metal blade with a sharpened tip and sharpened lower edge. It presents plain with the exception of a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo on the reverse ricasso, flanked by a maker’s code of “M7/112” for Carl Wüsthof, Solingen. The blade sits securely within a one-piece nickel-plated zink alloy hilt, with a hooked quillon and curved pommel facilitating a natural grip. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite comprise the handle, and are secured together with dual magnetic metal rivets. Inset into the obverse of the handle is an enameled HJ insignia, measuring 15 mm (w) x 25 mm (h). It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. The throat retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the knife in place during storage, and is held together by a single side rivet. Secured onto the reverse of the shaft with dual rivets is a blackened leather strap with a functional snap button for belt suspension. Issues consistent with age and use are evident throughout, and include oxidation and running marks to the blade, chipping to the enamel insignia, loss of finish to the nickel-plated features, and scratching and oxidation of the scabbard with fatigue to the leather strap. It is in an overall very fine condition.
