Germany, Imperial. A 1918 Manfred von Richthofen Commemorative Silver Medallion, by the Bavarian Mint
(Manfred von Richthofen Gedenkmünze in Silber). Constructed of silver, the obverse bearing a raised and exceptionally-detailed bust of Manfred von Richthofen (the “Red Baron”) with the Pour le Mérite clearly visible, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse bearing a central raised eagle flanked by a winged knight’s helmet from which emanates the von Richthofen family’s coat of arms, set against a backdrop featuring a memorial stone bearing his death date of “21 APRIL 1918” topped by an Iron Cross, circumscribed by an inscription of “DER ROTE KAMPF-FLIEGER” (“THE RED BATTLE-FLYER”), the edge maker marked “BAYER. HAUPTMÜNZAMT” indicating construction by the Bavarian Mint and “FEINSILBER” indicating 999 silver content, the reverse designer marked “K. GOETZ” for the firm of Karl Goetz, measuring 36.68 mm in diameter, weighing 19.7 grams, in extremely fine condition.
