(Königlich Preußischen Eisernen Kreuz von 1870). A beautiful 1870 cross pattée with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border, set in a pleasingly toned silver frame with a silver base plate, the obverse with a raised central W, with the re-institution date 1870 in raised numbering on the lower arm, and the royal crown on the upper arm, the reverse with a vertical pinback, a barrel hinge, and a round wire catch, with one prong remaining intact, measuring 41.97 mm (w) x 41.33 mm (h), weighing 14.0 grams, and in overall extremely fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity provided by Dr. Kurt Gerhard Klietmann (1910-1990), dated 23 September 1985 and addressed to Mr. John Broussard of Wiesbaden, and signed in blue ink.
Footnote: 1,304 awarded. However, according to the certificate of authenticity, due to the appearance and construction, Dr. Klietmann argues it is not a decoration awarded during the war but most likely purchased by the recipient in approximately 1890-1900.
