Germany, Imperial. An "First Strike" 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross Core

(Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes 1870 Herzstück). Reinstituted on 19 July 1870 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. (1870-1871 issue). A rare example of an unfinished core of an 1870 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, constructed of magnetic iron, consisting of a partially-formed Cross Pattée, the obverse with a raised central initial of “W”, with the reinstitution date of “1870” on the lower arm and a royal crown on the upper arm, the reverse with a discenable raised Cross Pattée with three central oak leaves, an initial institution date of “1813” on the lower arm, and raised initials of “FW” topped by a royal crown on the upper arm, unmarked, measuring 68.21 mm (w) x 67.70 mm (h), weighing 45.5 grams, in near extremely fine condition.
