Germany, Kriegsmarine. An Oberleutnant’s Summer Service Tunic, Named, 1939

(Kriegsmarine Waffenrock). An extremely well-preserved Kriegsmarine summer service tunic, constructed of a white cotton-blended twill. The tunic features an integrated collar, while the shoulders are adorned with boards constructed of cardboard-reinforced white wool bearing four bands of silvered aluminum wire piping. Each board is pinned with a gilded bronze rank pip and an unidentified cypher. Both measure 32 mm (w) x 105 mm (l) and are secured to the tunic by machine stitching at the outer edge and by a gilded bronze button bearing a raised anchor on the inner edge. The cuff of each sleeve is rolled up to a depth of 130 mm and secured in place by machine stitching around the circumference. Each breast flap has two pockets opening with stylized horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes, meeting gilded bronze buttons, similarly bearing raised anchors. Above the upper right breast pocket are three threaded loops accommodating a breast insignia, constructed of gilded zink and consisting of a Kriegsmarine-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle is unmarked and measures 94 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). The tunic closes with four gilded bronze buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. All buttons are marked on the reverse with “KRIEGSMARINE 1939” and the logo of maker Friedrich Linde, Lüdenscheid. The interior presents plain with the exception of a suspension loop stitched into the collar and a label inscribed “OFFIZIERKLEIDERKASSE DER KRIEGSMARINE, KIEL” (“KRIEGSMARINE OFFICER’S CLOTHING ACCOUNT, KIEL”), indicating that this tunic was purchased through a Kriegsmarine clothing allowance. The label bears an illegible owner’s name, with an issue number of “2399” and a manufacture date of “10. 1939”. The tunic measures approximately 422 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 520 mm and an overall body length of 630 mm. Minor soiling is evident, but the tunic is in an overall extremely fine condition.
