Germany, Kriegsmarine. An Officer’s Dagger, Unissued Mint II Pattern, by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie

(Kriegsmarine Offiziersdolch). An extremely well-preserved Kriegsmarine Officer’s dagger, measuring 41.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 25 cm-long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges, and narrow dual fullers running the majority of the length of each side. The obverse ricasso bears the maker’s logo of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, Solingen, consisting of the firm’s initials topped by its classic knight’s helmet emblem. It sits securely within a gilded bronze crossguard, featuring double-sided central fouled anchors with the reverse inset with a functional push-button release connecting to a clip which emanates from the blade’s ricasso to lock onto the scabbard. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed white celluloid, with the ribbing retaining a twisted and rolled bronze wire cord. It completes with a pommel consisting of a gilded German national eagle perched on top of a wreathed mobile swastika, screwing in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Wrapped around the crossguard and pommel is a matching and original portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn suspended from a strap of identical construction. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a gilded and dimpled shaft. The upper third of the shaft features two oak leaf bands, each retaining loops for the accommodation of a hanger. The throat is flanked by dual rivets which fasten in place a catch to meet the blade’s clip. The uppermost loop retains an original manufacturer’s label bearing the logo of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, Solingen, with the reverse side featuring the firm’s guarantee of quality. Demonstrating no notable damage or wear, this unissued dagger is in an overall extremely fine condition.
