Germany, Luftwaffe. A Ground Assault Badge, with Case, by Rudolf Karneth
(Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe mit Etui). Constructed of silvered and patinated zink, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a silvered Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, on top of a stylized cloud from which a lightning bolt emanates and strikes the ground, the reverse with three visible rivets securing the obverse eagle in place, with a crimped barrel hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, maker marked with the logo of Rudolf Karneth, Gablonz, measuring 43.84 mm (w) x 57.08 mm (h), weighing 31.6 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux dark blue leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilt inscription of “ERDKAMPF-ABZ.”, the interior with a blue rayon lid liner and partially-intact hinge cover, with a slotted blue felt medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 75 mm (w) x 78 mm (l) x 24 mm (h), the badge has lost most of its finish and minor material fatigue is evident to the case, in overall very fine condition.
