Germany, Luftwaffe. A Private Wartime Photo Album from the Estate of an Officer in Occupied France and Belgium
(Luftwaffe Fotoalbum). A fascinating private wartime photo album from the estate of a Luftwaffe Office. Constructed of a card stock binding with 20 card stock pages, the album retains 256 black-and-white photos. The images open with scenes of cityscapes and landscapes in what appears to be Belgium and northern France, with frequent signs of battle damage. Luftwaffe personnel are depicted conversing and at leisure in these locales. These are followed by numerous images of French prisoners of war (POWs), including colonial troops. The following third of the album displays similar scenes of battle damage and billeted Officers in northern France, and includes shots of down Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft. The remainder of the album features candid tourist shots taken by the owner in France, with added images of rubble being cleared away from a canal or coastal area. The interior of the back cover retains a vendor’s label reading “TEBE PHOTOTHEK”, with a cost of 3.50 Reichsmarks. The album measures 23 cm (w) x 30 cm (h). A band is visible to the cover with consequent cracking, but the album demonstrates no other damage or loss of images and is an interesting account of a Luftwaffe Officer’s experience in France and the Low Countries during the campaign of Spring 1940 in near extremely fine condition.
