Germany, Luftwaffe. An Observer’s Badge, with Case, by Paul Meybauer
(Beobachterabzeichen der Luftwaffe mit Etui). Constructed of silvered tombak, the obverse consisting of an oval laurel and oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, overlaid by a swooping and patinated Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse eagle in place, with a barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, maker marked “P. MEYBAUER, BERLIN”, measuring 52.67 mm (w) x 53.28 mm (h), weighing 44.5 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux dark blue leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilt embossed inscription of “LUFTWAFFEN-BEOBACHTER-ABZEICHEN”, the interior with a blue rayon lid linder and intact hinge cover, with a slotted blue velvet medal bed, closing with a functional metal snap button with exterior stud release, the lid demonstrating moderate exterior material fatigue, the badge presenting free of evident issues and in a near mint condition.
