Germany, RAD. A Reich Labour Service Officer’s Service Cap, by Mayser
(Reichsarbeitsdienst Dienstmütze für Offiziere). An extremely well-preserved Reich Labour Service (RAD) Officer’s “Robin Hood”-style service cap, constructed of smooth mid-brown wool. It is surrounded by a decorative scalloped fold-down side panel, fully trimmed along the upper edge with a band of silver aluminum wire piping. The crown is flanked on each side by dual side ventilation holes, all reinforced with brown-painted magnetic metal eyelets. A dark brown wool cap band fully surrounds the side walls, mostly hidden by the panel, with the obverse bearing a raised RAD insignia constructed of multi-coloured wool, cotton, and silver aluminum wire. The insignia measures 50 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). The exterior features are completed by a protruding cardboard-reinforced visor, with the obverse bearing an additional band of silver aluminum wire piping. The interior bears a 45 mm-wide light brown leather sweatband, securely held in place by a row of machine stitching. A silver-grey rayon liner fully encompasses the interior, with the crown bearing a maker’s mark of “MAYSER, HUTMACHER SEIT 1800”. An additional embossed Mayser mark appears on the right side of the sweatband. The latter folds down to reveal an intact size label bearing a number of “56”. The cap measures 175 mm (w) x 270 mm (l) x 135 mm (h). Minor material fatigue and soiling is evident to the interior liner, but the cap is in an overall extremely fine condition.
