Germany, SA. A Marine-Sturmabteilung Visor Cap
(Marine-Sturmabteilung Schirmmütze). A Marine-Sturmabteilung (Marine-SA) visor cap, constructed of a dark navy-blue wool. The cap features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a ribbed black mohair cap band. Pinned onto the peak is a replacement insignia consisting of a government-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. Measuring 55 mm (w) x 36 mm (h), the insignia is marked on the reverse with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M1/106” for Funcke & Brüninghaus, Lüdenscheid. The eagle is missing one of its two reverse attachment prongs. Also pinned onto the centre of the cap band directly beneath the eagle is a bronzed metal alloy oak leaf wreath set around a tri-colour cockade with a SA logo centrepiece. The cap band insignia measures 70 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. It is flanked on each side by gilded magnetic metal buttons, each bearing raised fouled anchors, securing in place a black leatherette chinstrap, itself adjusted with dual functional magnetic metal buckles. When not in use, the chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in a glossed black on the obverse and in a matte light brown on the reverse. The interior of the cap band is fully lined with a dark purple leather sweatband, and is also encompassed by a blue rayon-cotton blended twill liner. Underneath the sweatband, the cap retains an intact Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) label. It is otherwise unmarked, the cap measures approximately 250 mm (w) x 290 mm (l) x 155 mm (h). Issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include consistent fatigue of the outer wool, some loss of finish to the insignia, wear of the leather features, and soiling of the interior liner. The cap is in an overall very fine condition.
