Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Panzer EM/NCO’s M40 Overseas Cap, Owner-Attributed Example
(Waffen-SS Schiffchen M40 für Männer der Panzertruppe). A very well-preserved Waffen-SS EM/NCO’s M40 overseas cap, constructed of black wool. It is fully surrounded by fold-down side walls with slight frontal scalloping. The peak bears the outline of an insignia consisting of a SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika which has since been lost to time. Directly below, the centre of the cap band demonstrates the outline of an insignia consisting of a SS-style Totenkopf, which has similarly been removed. A multi-piece black cotton/rayon-blended liner fully encompasses the interior. Stitched onto the crown is a white cotton tag bearing an owner’s name of “G. BECK”, as well as a unit attribution of “8. SS-PZ. AUSB. KP.” (8. SS Panzer-Ausbildungs Kompanie). It also bears a white ink size mark of “55”.
