Germany, SS. An Allgemeine SS EM/NCO’s Visor Cap

(Allgemeine SS Schirmmütze für Mannschaften). An extremely well-preserved Allgemeine SS EM/NCO’s visor cap, constructed of black whipcord wool. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a black wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the latter are trimmed with white wool piping, and an additional band of identical piping trims the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak of the cap is a cupal insignia consisting of an SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The reverse of the eagle is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “155/36” for F.W. Assmann & Söhne. It measures 69.30 mm (w) x 31.34 mm (h) and retains both of its reverse attachment prongs. Directly below the eagle, the centre of the cap band is pinned with silvered first pattern Danziger-style Totenkopf, measuring 32.60 mm (w) x 28.78 mm (h) overall. The cap band is flanked by blackened magnetic metal rivets accommodating a multi-piece black leatherette chinstrap, adjusted with dual functional magnetic metal buckles. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor which is finished in a glossed black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse. Visible on the reverse of the visor is an SS Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo. A wide brown leatherette sweatband surrounds the interior which is encompassed by a multi-piece brown oilcloth liner. The crown retains a fully-intact transparent plastic moisture guard featuring a hollow slot for the insertion of a name tag, covering a gilded SS insignia. The sweatband folds down to reveal an additional SS RZM “Tuchmütze” label. The cap measures approximately 24 cm (w) x 25 cm (l) x 16.5 cm (h). Minor material fatigue is visible to the interior, the insignia demonstrate age-appropriate loss of silver finish, and fine surface cracking is evident to the visor. An interesting example featuring transitional insignia in extremely fine condition.
