Footnote: “Trench Art” on the lid depicts the words “WIEN” and “Prater” in addition to an etching depicting the amusement park and Vienna’s coat of arms. Across the coat of arms, a name spelling “Fleischer” is crossed out. On the body of the messkit, the owner etched city names such as “KRETA,” “SALONIKI,” TRIPOLIS,” “BENGASI,” “SOLLUM,” “CATANIA,” “BOLOGNA,” AND “ROMA.” They etched a design of the Acropolis, a palm tree, and volcano. The etching of “AFRIKA 1941 DAK” indicates they were a member of the Afrika Korps.
