Germany, Wehrmacht. A Christmas 1940 Commemorative Tankard
(Weihnachten 1940 Krug). Constructed of grey-painted glazed earthenware, the exterior bearing a hand-painted image of a house, above an inscription of “FELDPOSTNUMMER 31355 / WEIHNACHTEN 1940” (“FIELD POST NUMBER 31355 / CHRISTMAS 1940”) with the Feldpost number then assigned to 4. Fahrkolonne Infanterie-Divisions-Kolonne 212, and below a date of “1939/40”, with a protruding side handle flanked by an etched measurement of “0,5L” for one half litre, the base bearing partially-legible etched marks, measuring 115 mm (w) x 105 mm (h), no chips or cracks are evident but the tankard demonstrates minor loss of finish and the possible loss of a lid formerly attached to the handle, in very fine condition.
