Constructed of silvered and patinated zink, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a raised Heer-style German national eagle clutching a swastika, the reverse with an inscription of “WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42” (“WINTER BATTLE IN THE EAST 1941/42”), above a crossed sword and laurel branch, topped by a Stahlhelm and stick grenade, the loop maker marked with LDO code “1” for Deschler & Sohn, München, measuring 35.95 mm (w) x 44.13 mm (h), weighing 18.8 grams, accompanied by its original award document, constructed of off-white paper with black ink, named to “OBERGEFREITEN HELLMUT KAHLUND”, Panzer Korps-Nachtrichten-Abteilung 440, dated 20 August 1942, measuring 142 mm (w) x 202 mm (h), loss of silver finish evident to the medal, in overall near extremely fine condition.
