Germany, Wehrmacht. An Eastern Front Medal, with Package of Issue, by Carl Poellath
(Ostmedaille). Constructed of silvered and patinated zink, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a raised Heer-style German national eagle clutching a swastika, the reverse with an inscription of “WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42” (“WINTER BATTLE IN THE EAST 1941/42”), topped by a Stahlhelm and stick grande, unmarked, measuring 36.16 mm (w) x 44.21 mm (h), weighing 19.4 grams, accompanied by its period original package of issue, constructed of light brown paper stock, the obverse exterior bearing an inscription of “MEDAILLE ‘WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42’ (OSTMEDAILLE)”, the reverse exterior with a maker’s mark of “CARL POELLATH, SCHROBENHAUSEN”, measuring 60 mm (w) x 107 mm (h), the medal has lost most of its silver finish, in overall near extremely fine condition.
