Germany, Weimar Republic. A Reichswehr NCO’s Sabre, by Ernst Pack & Söhne
(Reichswehr Säbel für Unterführer). A well-preserved Reichswehr NCO’s sabre, measuring 94 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features an 81 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a slight curvature, sharpened tip and lower edge, and with a fuller running approximately two-thirds of the length of each side of the blade. It is unmarked with the exception of a maker’s mark on the obverse ricasso reading “E. PACK & SÖHNE, SOLINGEN”, topped by the firm’s classic blacksmith logo. It sits securely within a multi-piece, nickel-plated, magnetic metal hilt with a crossguard and hand guard. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed black celluloid, with the ribbing retaining an original twisted and rolled bronze wire cord. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. An integral band situated near the throat features a loop for the accommodation of a hanger. The latter is included and consists of a black leather strap with one end retaining a functional magnetic metal clip which locks onto the scabbard’s loop, while the opposite end has a bronze buckle for uniform suspension. Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include running marks to the blade with sporadic chipping of the edge, significant loss of nickel plating to the hilt, moderate loss of scabbard paint, and material fatigue of the leather hanger. The sabre remains in a very fine condition.
