(Kapiʻolani e Hoʻokanaka). Instituted on August 30, 1880 by King Kalākaua. A star of superb quality and rarity, consisting of an eight arms, each with clusters of smooth rays distinguished by etched boarders, a Gold Royal Hawaiian crown affixed in each quadrant, obverse presenting an red enameled Maltese cross on Gold, particularly fine enameling pattern, centre with an ornately hand crafted Gold mirrored "KK" (King Kalākaua), with white enamel surround inscribed "KULIA I KANUU" (Strive to Reach the Summit), 12 o'clock arm adorned by Gold embossed portrait of Queen Kapiʻolani, reverse with pin assembly, dual stays, with attractive makers escutcheon for Kretly, Paris as well as boars head denoting French small silver guarantee post 1838, measuring 81.2 mm (w) x 80 mm (h), with minor enamel flake to white surround, file marking to reverse pin, otherwise extremely fine and of the highest rarity.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
