Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchy. A War Honour Badge in Iron
(Kriegerehrenzeichen in Eisen). Instituted 13 March 1917 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. (1917 issue). Constructed of magnetic iron, the obverse consisting of a circular laurel leaf wreath, overlaid by a silvered zink alloy applique consisting of a central monogram of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, topped by a royal crown, and above a plaque bearing a number of “25”, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a barrel hinge and flattened vertical pinback meeting a flattened catch, unmarked, measuring 39.00 mm (w) x 44.90 mm (h), weighing 17.2 grams, with some loss of finish evident to the applique, in overall near extremely fine condition.
