Hesse-Darmstadt, Landgraviate. An Order of Philip the Magnanimous, Honour Cross, c.1910
(Orden Philipps des Großmütigen, Ehrenkreuz). Instituted on 1 May 1840 by Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse. (Issued 1900-1918). A silver gilt Maltese Cross with white enameled arms, obverse centre medallion featuring a Gold leftward facing bust of Philip I on a bed of blue enamels, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed “SI DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CONTRA NOS” (“IF GOD IS WITH US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?”) on Gold surround, reverse with a block hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a round wire catch, measuring 51.23 mm (w) x 50.89 mm (h), weighing 21.9 grams, minor tarnishing of silver gilt evident, extremely fine.
