Footnote: The Medal for the Italian Independence Wars and Unification was instituted on March 4, 1865 by Royal Decree No. 2174 and awarded to those who took part in war campaigns for the independence of Italy. This medal replaced all other previously granted medals, except the Crimea, St. Helena, Napoleonic campaigns of 1859 and the Expedition of Thousands medals.
