(Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro). Instituted in 1572 by Pope Gregory XIII at the request of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy. A large sash badge in Gold, consisting of a white enameled Shamrock Cross with finely enameled green fans in each quadrant, adorned by large hollow Gold Royal Crown, measuring 63.99 mm (w) x 99.57 mm (h - inclusive of Royal Crown with horizontally pierced ball suspension adorned by cross), with mid 20th century sash, with minor white enamel loss, indented crown, remains very fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, constructed of a silver faceted star, with eight points denoting a Grand Cross, overlaid by a white enameled Shamrock Cross with finely enameled green fans in each quadrant, reverse with dual stays and principle pin assembly, makers marked with cartouche of “D. CRAVANZOLE SUCCI FLLI BORANI ROMA,” measuring 88.48 mm (w) x 88.49 mm (h), weighing 61.4 g, well executed early period re-enameling of 11 o'clock green fan in quadrant, otherwise, very fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
