Instituted in 1888. Order of Merit: in silver with red, white and blue enamels, measuring 45.5 mm (w) x 49.2 mm (h), intact enamels, original ribbon with hook and eye; Membership Medal, Silver Grade: in aluminum, measuring 29.3 mm in diameter, original ribbon with hook and eye; and War Commemorative Medal: in bronze, measuring 29.5 mm in diameter, suspended from a bronze hanger with pinback, missing its catch. An Order of the Rising Sun, VIII Class, Instituted in 1875. In silver, measuring 31 mm (w) x 32.2 mm (h) inclusive of its laterally-pierced ball suspension, dark patina, contact marks, original ribbon with hook and eye; very fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
