(Militärverdienstkreuz, I Klasse). Instituted 5 August 1848. An Iron Cross paty constructed of gilded bronze, the obverse face is pebbled with a ribbed border, the centre bears the cipher “FF” for Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II, the 12 o’clock arm bears a royal crown and the 6 o’clock arm bears “1914”, the reverse is plain and bears a vertical pinback with a round wire catch, unmarked, 40.90 (w) x 40.81 mm (h), near mint.
