(Nishan-i-Istiqlal). Instituted 1922. Type III. 1926-1929 Issue. Civil Division. Of local Afghan manufacture, consisting of the badge of the order, in blackened metal (magnetic), featuring crossed swords with rays surrounded by laurels, measuring 50 mm (w) x 49.7 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), on period silk sash, extremely fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, consisting of a multirayed eight pointed star in blackened metal (magnetic), obverse centre presenting the Emir's tugra (seal) in silver (used between 1926-1929), Arabic script surround with Arabic numeral 2 stamped at centre, reverse with pin assembly, measuring 76.5 mm (w) x 75 mm (h), better than extremely fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
