Afghanistan, Kingdom. An Order of the Supreme Sun, Collar, c.1924

Type II. Issued 1923-26. (Order of the Sun, Nishan-i-Lmar-i-Ala) A rare collar of the order consisting of eight linked stars of the order, each an eight armed star superimposed on a sun with a bronze centre medallion depicting the coat of arms of Afghanistan, measuring 45.5 mm (w) x 45.5 mm (h), collar badge depicting the Afghanistan flag in bronze with silver emblem, with silver hand etched laurel surround, measuring 61.4 mm (w) x 53 mm (h), of local manufacture however an impressive collar, extremely fine and rare.

Footnote: The order was instituted by King Abdur Rahman at the end of the 19th Century, reformed and reorganised by King Habibullah Khan in 1901 and by King Amanullah Khan in 1923. The Order, also known as the Ordre de l’Ustar, was the personal gift of the sovereign. The collar of the order was reserved for Heads of State and Royalty alike. 

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
