Afghanistan, Kingdom. An Order of the Supreme Sun, I Class Grand Cross Case, c.1945

(Nishan-i-Lmar-i-Ala). Instituted in 1897. Hardshelled, wooden frame with the exterior in a dark maroon cloth fabric covering on all sides, the covering designed with a simulated cracked leather look, the Afghanistan coat-of-arms used between 1931 and 1973 in gold-coloured ink on the lid, inside lid lined in forest green satin, the lining exhibiting the offset impressions of the raised edges of the housings for the badge and breast star of the Order, the base also lined in forest green satin, raised platform in forest green velvet with a recessed medal bed and horizontally slotted medal bed for the badge and breast star respectively, two lime green embroidered support straps attached to the base and the lid on either side, dual-hinged, latch closure, measuring 158 mm (w) x 302 mm (h) x 59.5 mm (d), light contact on the exterior, one small stain on the forest green satin lining where it overlays the hinged area, near extremely fine.

Footnote: The Order of the Supreme Sun was a decoration of the former Kingdom of Afghanistan. It was instituted in 1897 and was discontinued in 1973. It was awarded for services to the state, in two grades: 1st Class and 2nd Class.
