Iran, Pahlavi Empire. An Order of the Lion and Sun, I Class Star, Russian Manufacture, c.1880
Instituted in 1872. A beautiful I Class Star, consisting of a silver body with seven rays set with clusters of five rays each set with old cut glass stones, one ray of four green stones between each cluster, the raised center medallion in Gold, presents a hand painted couchant Lion with a human-faced sun in the background, surrounded by two rings of stones provided great depth to the star, the reverse features a central screwback post, with a screwplate and nut, the plat has been marked BB (uncommon Russian maker) and a Type 4 Kokoshnik mark with initials, the star measures 81.85mm (w) x 81.25mm (h) x 19.10mm (d), weighs 58.4 grams, stones intact, dark patina on the silver, the medallion enamels are intact, a most superb and very rare star, in extremely fine condition.
