Iran, Pahlavi Dynasty. An Order of Homayoun, I Class Set, by Arthus Bertrand,
(دستور همایون). Instituted in 1939. Badge: multi-piece construction, insignia in silver with red and green enamels and incorporating a painted centrepiece, the insignia mounted to a four-pointed star base, each star point with four emanating rays, with a single emanating ray between each star point, maker marked "AB & Cie" (Arthus Bertrand & Compagnie) on the ring, measuring 59 mm (w) x 59.5 mm (h), the centrepiece ring exhibiting extensive loss of the green enamels, with traces of the red enamels remaining, the painted centrepiece generally unaffected, accompanied by an original full-length sash that incorporates a decorative moiré pattern and features a large bow-tie; and Breast Star: multi-piece construction, insignia in silver with red and green enamels and incorporating a painted centrepiece, the insignia mounted to an eight-pointed silver star base, each star point with eleven emanating rays, the central ray on each with green enamels, maker marked "ARTHUS BERTRAND PARIS" on the reverse cartouche, measuring 93 mm (w) x 93.5 mm (h), vertical pinback, exhibiting chipping and loss on five of the eight green enamelled rays. Together, fine. In their hardshelled case of issue, with a maroon leather-look paper exterior, Imperial Emblem of the Pahlavi Dynasty (Lion and Sun) in gold-coloured ink on the lid, inside lid in white satin, padded, maker marked "ARTHUS BERTRAND PARIS" and exhibiting the impression of the Badge and the Breast Star, base with a padded and recessed white cloth medal bed, measuring 150 mm (w) x 297 mm (h) x 65.7 mm (d), exhibiting extensive wear and soiling on the maroon paper exterior along with the lip of the lid and base, with the Imperial Emblem generally intact, the interior with wear evident in the fabric overlying the hinged area and light soiling present on the white satin lining on the inside lid, case fair. Footnote: The Order of Homayoun was originally instituted as the Order of the Lion and Sun under the Qajar dynasty in 1808. The Order was re-established as the Order of Homayoun, or Order of August or of Light, by Reza the Great, founder of the Pahlavi dynasty, by firman on February 15, 1939. The Order was presented in five classes to senior government officers and foreigners as Iran's third highest honour. The Emperor of Iran was entitled to award the Order in any class on New Years Day in recognition of service made to the advancement of culture, literature, or fine arts, service which promotes the development of the nation, selfless and altruistic aid or financial assistance during times of natural disasters or emergency, substantial innovations, or service provided to the community through charitable organizations.
